Child Development and Elementary Education

The Child Development and Elementary Education program at Cuyamaca College will help you shape the future while opening the doors to a profession that promises to be in demand for years to come. Students in this sought-after program learn the latest about the pedagogy and importance of a solid educational foundation for infants and toddlers, preparing them for employment as teachers, directors and aides in preschool and childcare centers. The Child Development program includes opportunities to teach at the Cuyamaca Child Development Center, which serves children of students, faculty, staff, and the community through a high-quality, professional program.

 What can you expect to earn with a degree or certificate from the Child Development program at Cuyamaca College? Graduates can find emotionally rewarding jobs at an array of child and infant care centers, while others have successfully opened their own home-based centers. Entry-level teachers at established child development centers can earn annual salaries in the mid-$20,000 level, while directors of preschool centers in the region are making $55,000 annually or more.
