Work Experience

Work Experience Requirement

To graduate with a certificate or degree in Environmental Management or Occupational Safety and Health Management, students are required to complete at least 1 unit of work experience.  Students and employers must agree that students will complete work experience that align with their certificate or degree program.

For Employers

If you are seeking students to complete work experience at your workplace, please download the Employer Guide for Work Experience.  For further information, please contact the Program Coordinator, Julie Godfrey, at (619) 660-4296, or at Julie.Godfrey@gcccd.edu.

For Students

EHSM 240 Work Experience, is a 1-4 Unit course required to graduate from all EHSM programs.  Prior to signing up for EHSM 240, you must already have a job completing EHSM work.  If the student does not work in an EHSM position, students are encouraged to work with their employer to find EHS related work within that job.  In the past students were allowed to complete EHS projects in the work place.  Examples might be:

  • Audit your work Hazardous Materials program
  • Audit your training programs or provide specific training to employees
  • Help maintain a hazardous waste program
  • Help maintain a stormwater program
  • Maintain a lock out/tag out program

For more information on work experience or assistance in finding a job, please contact your program advisor:

Student Comments

“It's a great honor to be associated with the EHSM (Environmental Health & Safety Management) program at Cuyamaca College. All the instructors, IPN (Industry Panel Night), and the participation in Balboa Earth Fair, Fire Expos and Fire Relief have helped motivate me toward a career in EHS. Throughout this process I gleaned an AS Degree, new friends and great professional acquaintances. I look forward to continuing our association, simultaneously working on my upper division.”
