Philosophy

“There is an important difference between learning which is concerned with the degree of understanding necessary to practice a skill, and learning which is expressly focused upon an enterprise of understanding and explaining.”

- Michael Oakeshott

Cuyamaca College offers an array of philosophy courses, beginning with A General Introduction to Philosophy, in which students explore a variety of principle questions addressed in the subject matter – including `What is the purpose of my existence?’

Other courses include: History of Philosophy (I and II), which surveys the development of philosophy from ancient times to today; Critical Thinking, which analyzes both inductive and deductive arguments; American Philosophy, which studies the main traditions of American philosophical thought with an emphasis on the philosophers, their works and systems of philosophy peculiar to the United States; and Philosophy of Religion – A Cross-Cultural Introduction, which delves into the nature and grounds of religious belief and the relation between religion and ethics.

The study of philosophy can be useful in professions beyond a career in academia, as many have found a strong background in the subject can pave the way for change in the business world. Students of philosophy gain critical thinking skills, can effectively evaluate chains of reasoning and can empathize with many different perspectives on a single subject. In fact, some of the most successful technology entrepreneurs have a background in philosophy. And according to the University of Maryland, no other degree in the humanities produces as many scientists as philosophy.
