COURSE DESCRIPTION
MATH 90 requires MATH 88 as prerequisite or sufficient background knowledge in doing the basic operations on rational numbers and signed numbers. Additionally, it requires sufficient ability to apply the concepts of ratios, proportions, percent, and measurement to realistic situations. It is designed for students who wish to develop or refresh their basic algebra skills. Upon successful completion of this course, a student could take MATH 103 or MATH 110 (Intermediate Algebra).
COURSE OBJECTIVES
The student shall develop an understanding of the basic properties of the real numbers, polynomials, rational expressions, exponents and radicals. Students will learn to apply concepts related to graphing, solving linear equations and inequalities, linear systems and quadratic equations. Significant emphasis will be placed on the vocabulary of algebra and translation from English to Algebra.
Note:
1) This book is used for Math 90 AND Math 103/110.
(One book for two courses)
Likewise, the MyMathLab code is one code you buy for both courses.
2) You may purchase the MyMathLab code only and not purchase the textbook because an ebook is available with the MyMathLab code.
Calculator: REQUIRED
Scientific Calculator is required but a Graphing Calculator is encouraged if you going beyond algebra.
TI-30x is a very good scientific calculator.
TI-84 plus is a very good graphing calculator. If you plan to major in a hard science, you should consider the TI-86 or TI-89.
