Teacher Profile


Tom Doyle received his Ph.D. in psychology from Arizona State University and a B.A. in psychology from Santa Clara University. After teaching as an adjunct psychology instructor at Grossmont College, San Diego State University, and MiraCosta College, he became a founding member of the full-time faculty at Cuyamaca College (where he remains today). At Cuyamaca College, he served as Chair of the Behavioral Sciences, coordinated psychology since the college's opening, and pioneered in the use of multimedia and online (distance) learning. He continued to teach at San Diego State University for 25 years.

Dr. Doyle's courses have included Introductory Psychology, Human Sexuality, Developmental Psychology, Individual Adjustment, Learning, Perception, and Abnormal Psychology. He has taught Native-Americans at the Viejas Reservation in Alpine, CA, and Camp Pendleton Marines at MiraCosta College. At SDSU, besides teaching upper and lower division courses, he was an interim director of graduate teaching assistants, participated in an experimental interdisciplinary program called "Coordinated Freshman Studies," and taught in the Honors Psychology program.

In addition to his commitment to teaching, Dr. Doyle has authored an Instructor's Manual and lecture transparencies for Rod Plotnik's Introduction to Psychology textbook. Always interested in using new technology and exploring alternative delivery methods, he taught in the Telecourse program for 15 years, and developed an online teaching resource site for the college (Teaching Online) during a sabbatical.

Dr. Doyle developed and published six versions of the interactive multimedia project, PowerStudy for Introduction to Psychology, on both CD and DVD. The project was integrated into many Introductory Psychology courses over its 13-year run.                     NexPowerStudy DVDt, he designed interactive animation storyboards for the first online edition of the Discovery Series edition of the Plotnik/Kouyoumdjian Introductory Psychology textbook. He is currently designing an interactive, multimedia Web Site (intoPsych.com) and a YouTube channel (intoPsych) which are evolving into new ways to present information about psychology.
