Course Information
PREREQUISITE

Math 170 requires 2 prerequisites with a grade of “C” or better:
A) Math 110 or the equivalent to Intermediate Algebra and
B) Math 97 or the equivalent to Geometry.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

1)       Evaluate all six trigonometric functions using the coordinate, right triangle or unit circle definitions.

2)       Use degree and radian measures to calculate unknown parts of a triangle.

3)       Graph all six trigonometric functions.

4)       Given a trigonometric function, find the domain, range, amplitude, period, phase shift or vertical shift (when applicable).

5)       Prove trigonometric identities.

6)       Apply trigonometric identities to solve for exact values.

7)       Simplify trigonometric expressions.

8)       Solve trigonometric equations.

9)       Calculate vector sum, vector products, dot products, vector magnitudes and vector angles.

10)    Analyze physical problems and create trigonometric relationships involving triangles, the coordinate system, the unit circle or vectors.

Materials: 

1)      REQUIRED: You must buy ALEKS
You can buy the access code online (wait till the first day of class)

2)      REQUIRED: You must buy my Lecture Notes from the bookstore (cheapest option) or print them from my website.  (I will give everyone Chapter 1 for free on the first day, but you are responsible to get the other chapters from the bookstore or print them.)

3)      REQUIRED: You must have a graphing calculator.  I suggest a TI-84 Plus.

4)      You are NOT required to buy the book; HOWEVER, it is a good idea to have a book for study.
There are many options for obtaining the textbook:
Trigonometry, by P. McKeague and published by Cengage either the 6th or 7th edition will be fine.

  • Cheapest options – buy a used copy of the 6th edition online
    (just make sure that shipping won’t take too long.  It will be helpful for the first week.)
  • Buy a used copy of the 7th edition online
  • Buy only the E-text to view in the computer with WebAssign, but wait till the first day of class for instructions.
  • Buy the physical textbook of the 7th edition and a WebAssign access code package from the bookstore.
    (The bookstore textbook is loose-leaf with 3-hole punch.  It was customized for Cuyamaca this way so you get a discounted price.
    The cover looks different, but it the same as the 7th edition inside.  You get both the book and the code for $157)

I know the textbook is a bit confusing, but the options make it cheaper for students.

recommended but not required. The book store sell the book and access code packaged together. The orange cover is paperback and cheaper then the new blue cover which is hardback.
